I have been thinking about when Steve and I first met Jeff.
The summer when he arrived at SIUE, Jeff came over to a back yard party at our house in Edwardsville. I think maybe Mike and Mikey and Jane and Terry and some others were there as well. Terry introduced Jeff to all of us. I can clearly see him standing there, a little nervous but also very funny, continually pushing up on his really thick glasses. And he was smiling. He had a great smile. I always liked to try to make him laugh. That dry wit of his was pretty special.
I also remember how he liked to sit on our couch and talk to our cats. He was definitely a cat lover. He loved our dog Jack as well. He would sit and pet Jack and quietly talk to him. It was always good to have Jeff come for dinner or for beers when we were living in Edwardsville during grad school. Steve would cook for us, and Jeff and I would hang out and and watch. Jeff always had some story to tell about someone or about something that had happened to him. He was a very good story teller. Almost always the story was hilarious.
Jeff was one of a kind - an amazing artist. I will always feel lucky that I got to spend the time with him that I did.
